Next Steps: Phase 2 - Content Audit & Migration

2.1: Audit Existing Documentation

  • Identify all existing documentation files in vault
  • Categorize by target location in new structure
  • Assess quality and completeness
  • Identify duplicates
  • Flag stale/outdated content

2.2: Content Gap Analysis

  • Identify missing documentation
  • Prioritize by importance
  • Create content creation roadmap

2.3: Migration Planning

  • Create file mapping (old location → new location)
  • Identify content needing updates
  • Plan migration order (low-risk first)

2.4: Begin Migration

  • Start with highest-priority docs
  • Apply templates to existing content
  • Update cross-references
  • Add frontmatter metadata
  • Create screenshot placeholders

Repository Status

Branch: docs/kmp-architecture-enhancement

New Files to Commit:

  • 68 new folders
  • 67 new markdown files
  • 2 utility scripts

Recommendation: Create a new branch for infrastructure changes:

git checkout -b docs/infrastructure-setup
git add Getting-Started/ User-Guide/ Development/ Technical-Reference/
git add Architecture-Decisions/ Project-Management/ Meta/ assets/ INDEX.md
git commit -m "docs: Phase 1 - Complete documentation infrastructure setup

- Created 68-folder structure for comprehensive documentation
- Generated 62 README files with descriptions
- Created 4 professional templates (Feature, Developer, API, ADR)
- Built master INDEX.md with complete navigation
- Added asset folder structure for images/videos/downloads

Architecture Decisions Made

Decision 1: 3-Tier Structure

Rationale: Separates concerns by audience and content type

  • Tier 1: Audience (User vs Developer)
  • Tier 2: Category (Features, Guides, Reference)
  • Tier 3: Specifics (Individual features/components)

Decision 2: Parallel Hierarchies

Rationale: User Guide and Development sections mirror each other

  • Both have Quick Start, detailed docs, how-tos, reference
  • Maintains consistency while serving different audiences

Decision 3: Technical Reference Separation

Rationale: API docs and technical details in dedicated section

  • Keeps user docs approachable
  • Allows technical depth without overwhelming users
  • Mirrors code structure (API, Database, Data Models)

Decision 4: Asset Organization

Rationale: Centralized media management

  • Single source of truth for images/videos
  • Organized by type and purpose
  • Easy to reference from multiple docs

Decision 5: Template-Based Authoring

Rationale: Ensures consistency and completeness

  • Every doc follows same structure
  • Writers don’t forget important sections
  • Easy for new contributors

Lessons Learned

What Worked Well

  1. Python script for README generation - Much faster than manual creation
  2. Comprehensive templates - Having everything upfront prevents rework
  3. Clear folder naming - kebab-case is readable and URL-friendly
  4. Asset organization - Planned structure for media from the start

Challenges Encountered

  1. Windows line endings - Bash script didn’t work, needed Python alternative
  2. Shell directory persistence - WSL kept resetting to original dir
  3. Existing content - Need to plan careful migration to avoid losing work

Improvements for Next Phase

  1. Create migration script - Automate content movement where possible
  2. Build validation tools - Check for broken links, missing frontmatter
  3. Screenshot templates - Create standard templates for consistency
  4. Diagram conventions - Establish consistent diagramming style

Success Criteria Met

  • Complete folder structure supporting all documentation types
  • README file in every folder explaining its purpose
  • Professional templates for all major doc types
  • Master index providing clear navigation
  • Asset organization for media files
  • Documentation conventions established
