Scoring Scenarios
This guide covers all the common scoring workflows in Archery Apprentice. From basic individual rounds to multi-participant scoring, you’ll find step-by-step instructions for every scenario.

Scoring an Individual Round
The most common scenario - scoring a round for yourself.
Step 1: Create the Round
- From the landing page, tap Round Scoring
- Tap Create Round or the + button
- Fill in round details:
- Round Name (e.g., “Practice Session - May 15”)
- Number of Ends (e.g., “6”)
- Arrows per End (e.g., “6”)
- Distance (e.g., “50 meters”)
- Target Size (e.g., “122cm”)
- Scoring System (e.g., “10-ring”)
- Bow Setup (select your equipment)
- Tap Create or Start Round
The round is now in IN_PROGRESS status.
Step 2: Score Each End
For each end:

Enter arrow scores in the order shot:
- Tap the score buttons or type scores
- For example: 10, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6

Mark X-ring hits (if applicable):
- Tap the X checkbox for inner 10 hits
- Important for tie-breaking in competition

Review the end total:
- App automatically calculates end total
- Running total updates in real-time

Tap “Next End” to continue to the next end
Step 3: Complete the Round
After scoring all ends:

Review your final statistics:
- Total score
- Average per arrow
- Accuracy percentage
- Ring distribution (X, 10, 9, 8, etc.)

Tap Complete Round

The round moves to COMPLETED status

View detailed statistics and round history
Scoring a Multi-Participant Round
Score rounds with friends or practice partners (up to 4 participants total).
Why Use Multi-Participant Mode?
- Score for yourself + up to 3 guests
- Track everyone’s scores in one session
- Compare performance in real-time
- Automatically generate temporary setups for guests
Creating a Multi-Participant Round
Steps:

Tap Create Round

Configure basic round settings (ends, arrows, distance, target, scoring system)

Enable Multi-Participant Mode:
- Toggle “Multi-Participant” on
- Or select “Multiple Participants”

Add participants:
- Enter guest names (e.g., “John”, “Sarah”, “Mike”)
- You can add 1-3 guests (4 total including yourself)
- App uses your Settings username for you

Select your bow setup (from your equipment)

Guest setups are auto-generated temporarily

Tap Start Round
Scoring Multi-Participant Ends
For each end:

Select the participant to score:
- Tap the participant name or icon
- Participant indicators show whose turn it is

Enter scores for that participant:
- Type or tap scores as normal
- Mark X-ring hits if applicable

Switch to next participant:
- Tap next participant name
- Repeat scoring process

After all participants scored:
- Tap “Next End”
- Move to the next end

Repeat for all ends
Multi-Participant Features
Real-time Leaderboard:
- See current standings during the round
- Compare scores end-by-end
- Identify who’s leading
Individual Statistics:
- Each participant gets separate stats
- Total score, average, accuracy
- Ring distribution per participant
Guest Setup Management:
- Guests get temporary bow setups automatically
- Equipment tracked separately from your equipment
- Guest setups don’t clutter your equipment list
- Can be cleaned up later
Completing a Multi-Participant Round
- Score all ends for all participants
- Review final standings and statistics
- Tap Complete Round
- View detailed breakdown by participant
Post-Round:
- Each participant’s data is preserved
- You can review individual performance
- Compare participants side-by-side
Using Different Scoring Methods
Archery Apprentice supports three scoring input methods.
Method 1: Manual Entry (Default)
Best for: Most archers, fastest input method
How to use:
- During scoring, use the number pad or buttons
- Type each arrow score in order
- Tap Next or Enter to confirm
- X-ring checkbox available for 10s
Advantages:
- ✅ Fastest method
- ✅ Simple and straightforward
- ✅ Works for all scoring systems
Disadvantages:
- ❌ No coordinate capture
- ❌ No grouping analysis
Method 2: Target Face Scoring
Best for: Shot grouping analysis, detailed performance tracking
How to use:
- Switch to Target Face mode
- See a visual target face on screen
- Tap where each arrow landed
- App calculates score based on coordinates
- X-ring automatically detected
Advantages:
- ✅ Captures arrow coordinates (x, y)
- ✅ Enables grouping analysis (eccentricity, radial SD, bias)
- ✅ Visual representation of shot pattern
- ✅ Helps identify aiming issues
Disadvantages:
- ❌ Slower than manual entry
- ❌ Requires precise tapping
When to Use:
- Competition preparation (analyze patterns)
- Testing new equipment (compare grouping)
- Diagnosing form issues (identify bias)
- Practicing at close range (accurate placement)
Method 3: Quick Entry
Best for: Rapid scoring when you need speed
How to use:
- Switch to Quick Entry mode
- Streamlined interface with minimal taps
- Enter scores rapidly with fewer confirmations
- Best for practice rounds
Advantages:
- ✅ Very fast
- ✅ Minimal UI interaction
- ✅ Good for frequent practice
Disadvantages:
- ❌ No coordinate capture
- ❌ Less detailed than other methods
Switching Methods Mid-Round
You can change scoring methods during a round:
- Tap Settings or Menu in scoring screen
- Select Scoring Method
- Choose Manual, Target Face, or Quick Entry
- Continue scoring with new method
Pausing and Resuming Rounds
Life happens - sometimes you need to stop mid-round.
Pausing a Round
Why pause?
- Need to adjust equipment
- Taking a break
- Weather delay (outdoor)
- Interruption
How to pause:
- While scoring, tap Pause button
- Round status changes to PAUSED
- Progress is saved automatically
Resuming a Paused Round
Steps:
- Go to Round Scoring
- Find the paused round (marked with PAUSED badge)
- Tap on it to open
- Tap Resume
- Continue scoring from where you left off
What’s Preserved:
- All previously entered scores
- Current end position
- Round configuration
- Equipment selection
Paused Round Behavior
- Paused rounds appear in your active rounds list
- You can have multiple paused rounds
- No time limit on pause duration
- Statistics calculate normally when resumed
Cancelling a Round
Sometimes a round goes wrong and needs to be abandoned.
When to Cancel
Good reasons to cancel:
- Equipment failure mid-round
- Severe weather (outdoor)
- Realized round was configured incorrectly
- Round no longer valid (rule violation, etc.)
Bad reasons to cancel:
- Just having a bad round (complete it anyway for data)
- Don’t want the score in your history (keep for learning)
How to Cancel
Steps:
- Open the round (in progress or paused)
- Tap Menu or Options
- Select Cancel Round
- Confirm cancellation
What Happens:
- Round status changes to CANCELLED
- Round removed from active list
- Scores are preserved but marked as cancelled
- Won’t affect statistics or equipment performance data
Viewing Cancelled Rounds
- Cancelled rounds are hidden by default
- Toggle “Show Cancelled” to view them
- Useful for troubleshooting or reviewing what went wrong
Reviewing Previous Ends
During a round, you can review ends you’ve already scored.
Why Review Previous Ends?
- Verify score entry accuracy
- Check for patterns (fatigue, consistency)
- Compare current end to previous performance
- Mental preparation for next end
How to Review
Steps:
- While scoring a round (IN_PROGRESS)
- Tap Review Ends or End History
- See list of completed ends with:
- End number
- Arrow scores
- End total
- Running total after that end
- Tap on an end to see details
- Tap Back to return to current scoring
What You See:
- All arrow scores for that end
- X-ring marks (if applicable)
- End total and average
- Running total at that point
- Which participant (multi-participant rounds)
Editing Previous Ends
Important: You generally cannot edit previous ends once submitted to preserve data integrity.
Exception: If you notice a mistake immediately, some implementations allow editing the most recent end.

Correcting Scoring Mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes - here’s how to fix them.
During the Same End (Before “Next End”)
Easy fix:
- Notice the mistake before moving to next end
- Tap the arrow score to edit
- Change the value
- End total recalculates automatically
- Tap Next End when satisfied
After Moving to Next End
More involved:
Option 1: Review and Edit (if supported)
- Tap Review Ends
- Find the end with the mistake
- If edit is enabled for recent ends, tap Edit
- Correct the scores
- Save changes
Option 2: Note for Later
- Continue the round as-is
- Note the mistake in round description or notes
- Understand the statistics will reflect the error
Option 3: Cancel and Restart
- If the mistake is severe and early in the round
- Cancel the current round
- Start a new round with correct data
Best Practices to Avoid Mistakes
Before Entering Scores:
- Count arrows shot (should match arrows per end)
- Verify scores with shooting partner if available
- Double-check X-ring marks
When Entering:
- Enter scores slowly and deliberately
- Verify end total before moving to next end
- Use consistent method (highest to lowest, left to right, etc.)
After the Round:
- Review final statistics for anomalies
- Check for impossible scores (e.g., 7 tens in a 6-arrow end)
Different Scoring Systems
Archery Apprentice supports multiple scoring systems for different disciplines.
10-Ring System (Standard Outdoor)
How it works:
- 10 rings: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
- Inner 10 is X-ring (for tie-breaking)
- Miss = 0 points
Common uses:
- Olympic recurve (outdoor)
- Target archery competitions
- Most standard practice rounds
Scoring tips:
- Always mark X-ring hits
- X-count matters for rankings
- Used with 122cm or 80cm targets
6-Ring System (NFAA)
How it works:
- 6 rings only: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
- Simplified from 10-ring
- Used in field archery
Common uses:
- NFAA field rounds
- Casual practice
- Beginners
Scoring tips:
- Easier for beginners to score
- Fewer judgment calls on line breaks
- Different target face (6-ring target)
5-Zone System (Simplified)
How it works:
- 5 zones: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
- Very simple, great for practice
- Quick to score
Common uses:
- Practice rounds
- Training new archers
- Focus on form over score
X-Ring Compound Scoring
How it works:
- Same as 10-ring, but X-ring is smaller
- X-ring = 10 points (but marked differently)
- Used in compound archery
Common uses:
- Compound bow competitions
- Precision shooting disciplines
Scoring tips:
- X-ring is much smaller than recurve X-ring
- Every arrow touching inner 10 counts as X
- Critical for compound rankings
Selecting Scoring System
When creating a round:
- On round creation screen
- Select Scoring System dropdown
- Choose:
- 10-ring
- 6-ring
- 5-zone
- X-ring (compound)
- Others as available
- App validates scores based on system chosen
Changing Scoring System:
- Cannot change scoring system mid-round
- Must complete or cancel round first
- Create new round with correct system
Scoring Tips & Best Practices
General Scoring
Be Consistent:
- Enter scores in the same order every time
- Highest to lowest is common
- Or left-to-right on the target
Use the Right Method:
- Manual entry for speed
- Target face for analysis
- Quick entry for frequent practice
Select Bow Setup:
- Always choose your bow setup when creating rounds
- Enables equipment performance tracking
- Critical for comparing setups
Multi-Participant Rounds
Clear Communication:
- Ensure all participants know whose turn it is
- Call out scores before entering
- Verify end totals together
Name Participants Clearly:
- Use real names, not “Guest 1”
- Makes it easier to track who shot what
Review Standings:
- Check leaderboard between ends
- Builds engagement and friendly competition
Equipment Tracking
Link Equipment:
- Select your actual bow setup
- Don’t skip this step
- Enables all analytics features
Note Equipment Changes:
- If you change equipment mid-session, complete current round first
- Start new round with updated setup
- Maintains data integrity
Performance Review
Review After Each Round:
- Check statistics immediately
- Note patterns (fatigue, consistency)
- Adjust practice focus based on data
Use Historical Data:
- Compare to previous rounds at same distance
- Track improvement over time
- Identify trends
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Scores Won’t Save
Possible causes:
- Not all arrows entered (e.g., 5 of 6)
- Invalid score for scoring system (e.g., “11” in 10-ring)
- Network issue (tournament rounds only)
Solutions:
- Verify all arrow scores entered
- Check scores are valid for your scoring system
- For tournaments, check network connection
Can’t Complete Round
Possible causes:
- Not all ends scored
- Participant missing scores (multi-participant)
- Round still in PAUSED status
Solutions:
- Score all remaining ends
- Check all participants have complete scores
- Resume paused rounds before completing
Wrong Equipment Selected
Solutions:
- If round not started: Delete and recreate
- If round in progress: Complete it, note in description
- Create new round with correct setup going forward
